Three Key Ways to Make Sure Everyone Can Get Help with Rent

Having a place to live is something everyone needs, but too many people can't afford their rent. Rental help from the government is important because it can prevent people from losing their homes, living in too-small spaces, or moving too often.

However, out of every four people who need this help, three don't get it because there's not enough money being given for this purpose. This problem affects people of color, those with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and others, largely due to unfair policies from the past.

To make housing a reality for everyone, important changes need to happen:

1. Set Aside Money Long-Term

Instead of deciding each year how much money to give for rent help, the government should make sure there's always enough money for everyone who needs it. This will involve changing from a yearly-based decision to a guaranteed system.

2. Focus on the Most in Need

To start, help should be guaranteed for those with the very lowest incomes. This would mean people who make less than 15% or 30% of the average income in their area would get help first.

3. Make It Easier to Get Aid

Get rid of rules that keep people from getting help, like their criminal history or immigration status. Also, give extra support so people can find housing more easily.

By following these principles, we can move towards a future where everyone with a low income who needs rent assistance will get it.

The Trouble with Rent Costs Nowadays

The difference between income and what rent costs is a big problem. It's gotten worse over the years and it's the hardest on people with the least money.

Too many of these people spend more than half their money just on a place to live. This leads to more homelessness, especially after the pandemic when the extra help went away.

Rent Assistance: It Really Works

Rent aid helps over 5 million families have a place to live by covering the part of rent they can't afford. When people get this help, they can leave bad housing situations and take better care of their kids, and they don't have to worry so much about their next meal or a place to sleep. This not only helps individuals, but also makes communities stronger.

But there’s not enough money for everyone who needs this kind of help. If we had enough to help everyone, we could improve the lives of almost 18 million families and also fix the unfairness that renters of color face.

Big Steps Towards Everyone Getting Rent Help

To shift from not having enough rent aid to having enough for everyone will take time. But the goal should be to eventually have a system that works and is fair for all families with low incomes.

To sum up, if we want to really solve the problem of people not having homes and improve how much money people have for their basic needs, we need to make sure everybody who needs housing help can get it. Pairing this strategy with making more homes available and trying to control rent costs will make things even better.
